INTRODUCTION

Present methods for treating inflammation employ using steroids. Although steroids are highly potent anti-inflammatory agents, they are accompanied with detrimental health effects. Therefore, novel and “gentler” treatment methods are needed to treat inflammation.

TECHNOLOGY

Georgia State University and Rochester researchers have discovered anti-inflammatory properties of Vinpocetine for the first time. Anti-inflammatory response is achieved in vitro and in vivo by inhibiting NF-kappa B-dependent pathway. The advantage is that Vinpocetine is already a clinically approved drug for brain-related disorders and is known for PDE1 inhibition and regulation of calcium and sodium channels.
